UPenn Satellite Clinic for AIDS/HIV Positive Patients

An Interview with Tyler Smith

Learning Objectives:

After hearing this podcast, the listener should:

  • See how their fellow dental students are working to make a difference in their community, and understand that they too can make a difference.
  • Know the challenges associated with setting up a satellite clinic, and working with patients with infectious diseases.

Tyler Smith is a D4 dental student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Tyler and his classmates, Kari Hexem and Jonathan Vo, have worked in conjunction with the Philadelphia FIGHT program to establish a satellite dental clinic specifically for AIDS/HIV patients living in the Philadelphia area. Tyler and his classmates use this clinic to screen patients and perform routine dental work before setting them up with appointments at UPenn’s general clinic. In this podcast, we talk to Tyler about Philadelphia FIGHT, how and why he worked to establish this clinic, and the unique challenges associated with AIDS/HIV positive patients in a dental environment.
