Public Water Fluoridation & The Role of the Dental Professional
An Interview with Dr. Molly Melbye
Molly Melbye, DDS, MPH
Learning Objectives:
This podcast is an interview with Dr. Molly Melbye on the
subject of public water fluoridation. Upon hearing this podcast, the listener
should:
- Understand
the “conflict” surrounding public water fluoridation, and what they (as
future dental professionals) can do for the cause.
- Know
the effects of public water fluoridation, and be able to decide where they
stand on this potentially divisive issue.
Dr. Molly Melbye is a senior research fellow at the University of
Washington School of Dentistry. In January 2013, she along with Dr. Jason
Armfeld published a piece in the Journal of the American Dental Association
concerning public water fluoridation, a hot button topic that is of great
consequence to national public health. In Dr. Melbye’s opinion, the opponents
of public water fluoridation, while very vocal, do not have much of a
scientific leg to stand on. She has received a lot of feedback, both positive
and negative, concerning this article already. In this interview with THE NEXT
DDS, Dr. Melbye states her case, and tries to spread the message that public
water fluoridation is safe and effective.
