Guard Your Smile

Community Outreach Program

Learning Objectives:
This podcast features two second-year dental students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry who conducted a unique initiative in their community. After hearing this podcast, the listener should:

  • Know what the “Guard Your Smile” initiative is, and why it was taken up by these dental students
  • Understand the benefits of custom mouthguards in contact sports
  • See how dental students can make a difference in their communities

Rob Christensen and Lauren Katz are second-year dental students at the UNC School of Dentistry.  Recently, Rob and Lauren conducted the “Guard Your Smile” initiative, with the goal of equipping local athletes with unique, custom-made mouthguards.  They had noticed that these high school athletes were either using “boil-and-bite” or stock mouthguards, which offer significantly less protection and comfort than custom-fitted variations, or foregoing the use of mouthguards entirely, which could potentially lead to extensive damage to the oral environment.  The initiative was a resounding success, and Rob and Lauren hope to create a sustainable model that can be passed down through the years at UNC School of Dentistry, as well as adopted in other schools around the country.  Those wishing to offer a donation to Guard Your Smile or to learn more about implementing a similar initiative within their own communities can contact Rob directly at rchriste@dentistry.unc.edu.
