Dentists for Della: ADA's Best New Student Organization

An Interview with Mallory Dawson

Learning Objectives:

After hearing this interview, the listener should:

  • Understand some challenges associated with treating older, geriatric patients
  • Be able to think of some ways in which their university might be able to organize a program such as Dentists for Della in your local area

The Horizon Award is a yearly commendation bestowed by the American Dental Association on the Best New Student Organization in the country. In order to be eligible for the award, the organization must be no more than two years old. This year, the award was granted to the Dentists for Della program at Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine, an organization dedicated to providing quality dental care to senior citizens living in a local nursing home near the GRU campus. At some point during their dental school careers, all students from GRU are required to participate in this activity, and just recently, the organization has started providing restorative care to those geriatric patients in need. In this podcast interview, we had the pleasure of speaking with Mallory Dawson, a D4 student at Georgia Regents University, who shared with us some insights about this award winning organization.

*Mallory Dawson, Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine, Class of 2014
