Learning Objectives:

After hearing this podcast, the listener should:

  • Understand the methodologies and results of the 2013 ADA/Dentsply student clinical research award winning presentation
  • Appreciate the scale and support network that goes into an award-winning research project
  • Be inspired to undertake his or her own research project for future competition

Paul Johnson is dental student of the 2014 class at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry. In 2013, Paul won the ADA/Dentsply Student Clinical Research Award, presented in New Orleans at the ADA Annual Session, for his research on alveolar bone loss in subjects with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. He hopes that these findings will benefit the field of dentistry in the future by providing clinicians and general practitioners with more insightful options when treating elderly patients suffering from these conditions.

In this interview, Paul talks about the background, methods, scope, scale, and results of his research, as well as the actual presentation process at the ADA session. In addition to his research work, Paul is an entrepreneur who manufacturers and sells a low-cost ($289.00) headlight available to dental students and professionals across the country that is light weight (0.4 oz), contains a highly powerful LED bulb, and comes with a 5 year warranty on his website,www.johnsondentallabs.com.
